DFM Checklist: 12 Rules for Manufacturable PCB Assembly

Design for Manufacturing (DFM) prevents costly production issues.

The 12 DFM Rules

1. Maintain minimum 0.15mm trace/space for standard PCBs

1. Add fiducial marks (3 minimum) on board edges

1. Keep components ≥3mm from board edges

1. Avoid 90° trace corners — use 45° angles

1. Ensure proper thermal relief on ground pads

1. Maintain 0.3mm minimum annular ring

1. Add tooling holes (≥3.2mm) for assembly fixtures

1. Keep BGA pads within reworkable area

1. Use standard pad sizes from component datasheets

1. Include polarity markers for diodes, capacitors, ICs

1. Panelize with 5mm border and V-score or routing
